License for CHIP and CHIP FOTO-VIDEO magazines goes to Five Monkeys Media
by Johanna Schallehn
The publishing house BurdaForward is awarding the license for two print magazines of the CHIP brand to the newly founded media house Five Monkeys Media. Both CHIP magazine and CHIP FOTO-VIDEO magazine will be published by the new licensee from April 1, 2024. All digital offerings of the CHIP brand will remain within BurdaForward GmbH, which includes CHIP.de as well as numerous well-known digital portals such as FOCUS online, BUNTE.de and TVSpielfilm Plus.
For more than 45 years, CHIP magazine has accompanied the digital revolution at all levels and is now the information medium for almost two million readers when it comes to the latest technology trends. CHIP FOTO-VIDEO magazine has been published monthly since 2003 and reaches a top target group of more than 160,000 professional and amateur photographers per issue. In future, both print products will be published independently by Five Monkeys Media GmbH. The young company is a start-up of Kouneli Holding GmbH, successful publisher of the German edition of PLAYBOY and SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, and New C GmbH, a specialist for technology magazines and valued editorial partner of BurdaForward and CHIP FOTO-VIDEO for several years.
BurdaForward and Five Monkeys Media will work closely together to ensure the success of the product, for example by continuing to share and utilize high-quality test data for the large number of product tests from BurdaForward's CHIP Test Center.
The eleven employees affected were informed at an early stage and on an ongoing basis. Discussions are currently being held with them about remaining at BurdaForward or finding individual solutions. Irrespective of this, the CHIP FOTO-VIDEO magazine will be continued in unchanged form by the existing New C editorial team.
BurdaForward manager Andreas Laube will move to Five Monkeys Media on April 1, 2024, where he and his team will be responsible for CHIP magazine as managing partners. The 49-year-old can draw on extensive magazine experience and has worked in various roles at BurdaForward for more than ten years, including as Managing Director responsible for CHIP magazine. The proven print expert is looking forward to his new role at Five Monkeys Media after making the change at his own request:
The magazines CHIP and CHIP FOTO-VIDEO stand for editorial excellence and are valued for their great journalistic expertise by both their readers and advertising customers. We would therefore like to thank BurdaForward for their trust and are very much looking forward to the partnership. We are convinced that as licensees we can continue the successful history of these leading media brands together," says Laube.
