92 percent of all smartphone users have already had to deal with damage to their device, according to a study by the digital association Bitkom. However, whether it is worthwhile to take out cell phone insurance depends largely on the scope of services and the costs. CHIP has conducted a comparative test and awards the winners with the CHIP test seal.
Similar performance with large price differences
Eight rates for smartphones in five price ranges, from 500 euros to 2,000 euros, were compared by the CHIP test center in terms of scope of services, claims settlement and contract content.
The results are not unpleasant from the consumer's point of view: Six of the eight offers receive a "very good" rating, none is worse than "good". So there are no major differences in terms of content. Instead, there are differences in price. The monthly premiums for a mid-range cell phone range from 7.95 euros to 13.50 euros.
The test winner is the "Handyschutzbrief Premium" from the provider SCHUTZGARANT with first-class services in all test categories. At the same time this offerer scores with the most favorable rates in all Handy price classes - for which CHIP also awards it the price tip.
The devil is in the details
Despite the many similarities between the rates, it is always worth taking a look at the insurance conditions so that you can find the right solution for your purposes. It is true that the classic cases of damage are covered by all insurances: theft, display breakage, water damage. However, a simple loss is usually not covered - there must first be a third-party fault. Even if the device is damaged in a house fire, not all providers pay.
Five of the eight rates tested offer a very flexible term. It is possible to cancel at short notice, sometimes even on a daily basis. Only the last two in the CHIP test, "Insure MyMobile L" from Telekom and "Complete Protection" from Wertgarantie, require a minimum term of 12 months.
The environment always benefits
Regardless of the rate, the impact of smartphone insurance on the environment is positive in any case. According to a study by Wertgarantie, insured devices are repaired three times as often as uninsured ones - and thus do not end up prematurely as electronic waste.
The detailed test result is to be read on CHIP.de as well as in the CHIP magazine 05/2023. The magazine is available immediately in the trade as well as in the CHIP Kiosk.
